What is the "Blue Horses Project"?
Andalucia is a wonderful place to live, but has a lot of animals in need. The Blue-horses project started by the end of 2004 and aims to help horses that, without any fault of their own, have been badly treated, abused, neglected, or even simply abandoned. These horses need people to stand up for them. Seeing a lot of suffering animals everywhere was the main reason for starting this project and website.
Taking in horses has become a smaller part of the job, because, as we found out after doing this for quite a while, this does not really solve the problems. Therefore our main focus at present is to support the CYD Santa Maria, a Spanish associacion that is very active and professional in denouncing cases of maltreatment and also takes in rescue horses. This way we try to change the current situation by making sure that abuse and neglect are registered and punished where possible. Another important activity is to try to make people aware, especially children, of the responsibility they have towards their animal and how to take proper care. A lot of problems are caused simply by unawareness and misinformation. The number of Blue horses at centre Santa Maria, where our horses are currently living together with rescue horses of the centre, changes often, as our aim is always to get them adopted as quickly as possible. So, we help denounce maltreatment, take care of rescued horses, nourish them back to physical and mental health and find them a adoption family in the area. In some cases we have to choose for a dignified death. The majority of the rescued horses are not suitable for riding, but are mainly suitable as company horses. Some horses have to stay with us for a longer period of time, because of the extensive care they need. For individual pictures and stories, see horses. Some of these horses are Blue Horses of the Blue Horses Association, like the Duke for example, and some belong to the Cyd Santa Maria Rescue Centre, like Torrente. The two organisations work together in many ways and have the same goal: making Andalucia a better place for all horses.
It is wonderful to see these horses having fun in life again, but obviously the recovery, housing, medical care and transport is a costly affair. To keep the Blue Horses Project running successfully, we need the help of many people. Not just financially, although this is a very important part of it, but also to assist us in finding decent homes for these animals. Maybe you are a horse lover, appreciating everything that horses give us and want to give something in return: of course we welcome any form of contribution. Please contact us. We thank you very much for your cooperation and hope to see or hear from you soon.

Fly masks
The summer is nearly upon us and all sorts of flying insects are buzzing around us and the horses again. Fly masks protect the eyes and ears of the horses against these irritations. If you are buying a fly mask for your own horse, please remember us, we are always in need of fly masks and rugs and would welcome any donation. Through the hyves in Holland we have already received a couple of generous donations and were able to buy three good fly masks!

Hacking out without being ridden!
After living with his adoption family in Almeria for more than one year now, you can see that Africano is a very happy horse. Every now and then he comes along on a hack, but without a rider. It is clear he likes to show of while being out. Thank you very much Paul and Jules for giving him so much life!

Blue Horses represented in Holland
Danielle Riemersma, 31 jaar, lives in Strijen, Netherlands. She has been passionate about horses all her life. Last year she started lessons in horsemanship and that has opened her eyes, to be able to communicate with a horse respectfully. Danielle takes care of Lominard, a beautiful and sweet grey that likes a good discuss- ion. She is glad to help the Spanish horses through the Blue Horses Project, the pictures and stories have touched her heart. This is the start of some serious Dutch activities through Blue-horses.hyves.nl/, and through horsemanship clinics organised by Danielle. From the Blue Horses: thank you very much and good luck!

Claudia back in the Centre.
It seemed to start off so well, but unfortunately the adoption family of Claudia was no longer capable of keeping her. This is the second time she comes back from adoption and for the time being she stays with us. Hopefully another lovely family comes along that wants to adopt a family friend more than a riding horse.
